A letter from George Woodman to Francesca Woodman, September 4, 1977: From the Archives...
September of 1977 marked the start of new academic year for each of the Woodmans and the pursuit of teaching or studies in four different locations around the US and Europe. Francesca had just begun her fruitful year in Rome with the RISD European Honors Program, after spending some time in Antella. In a letter sent to her from Boulder, George recaps summer travels and reports on the rest of the family’s activities: Betty was about to head to Scripps College in Claremont, California where she would spend the semester as a visiting artist; Charlie would soon be returning to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio where he would continue his work with film and video; and George was holding down the fort in Boulder, busy with teaching at the university, running the art department, preparing for visiting artists and critics, and, of course, painting.
This letter is the first of many in a semester-long group correspondence filled with passages about new works, developing ideas, travels and particularly good meals, some of which is still on view through September 26th in Interior Scroll or What I Did on My Vacation at S&S Corner Shop in Springs, NY, a multi-venue exhibition organized by Soft Network.
