The Flames
takes a transhistorical approach to ceramics to assert the critical relationship of clay to both art and humankind. The exhibition combines ancient objects dating back to the Neolithic period with those made by contemporary artists and everything in between. Betty Woodman’s Alessandro’s Rooms (2011) is a 9-meter long composition of canvas, clay, and paint which joins the history of ceramics to the history of painting. Terra cotta and Roman-inspired vessels and reliefs populate and animate an interior more influenced by Modernism, embodying the ethos of this ambitious exhibition.
