OPENING IN JULY: Betty Woodman in upcoming exhibitions
Distant Conversations: Ella Walker and Betty Woodman
Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire
July 15 - October 22, 2023
This two-person exhibition features the work of Betty Woodman (1930-2018) and Ella Walker (b. 1993) and is part of the museum’s new series Distant Conversations, exploring intergenerational dialogues and artistic conversations between artists who may not have met but whose work resonates regardless. The exhibition is curated by Lorenzo Fusi, chief curator.
Globally recognized for her experimentation and inventiveness, Woodman contributed significantly to the repositioning of ceramics in contemporary art discourse. She spent extended periods in Italy throughout her long career, and its art and architecture remained important influences on her increasingly ambitious and complex practice, which also often addressed the female figure. Similarly, Walker’s monumental yet evanescent canvases revisit the European medieval and Renaissance frescoes tradition, introducing challenges to conventional representations of femininity.
