George Woodman, "Loie Wearing an 18th Century Sculpture," 2012: STAFF PICKS
Layaan Roufai, WFF’s Library & Archives Intern through Studio Institute’s Summer Arts Intern program:
Hello! I’m Layaan Roufai, the Woodman Family Foundation’s Library and Archives Intern. This summer I’ve been tasked with cataloging the foundation’s expansive book collection and entering publication information into the artwork database to revamp the research library. His black and white photography seemed drastically different from the colorful vibrancy of his abstract paintings. I was excited to find a marriage of his two mediums in his series of painted photographs. My personal favorite is his 2012 piece entitled, "Loie wearing an 18th Century Sculpture". In this piece, George outlines his photograph of an 18th century sculpture in bright colors that place the sculpture in this century. He photographs his nude model holding the photograph, positioned as though the sculpture is her body from the torso down. I love this piece for the implementation of three different art mediums; photography, painting and sculpture, to give this classical sculpture a lifelike and modern feel.
